What to Include in a Knitwear Manufacturing Enquiry

An enquiry checklist for international apparel buyers

At Shristy Fashion Ltd., knitwear development can begin from a complete technical specification or from available reference samples, artwork, photographs or a buyer concept. Pattern making is handled in-house, with sample development and revisions supported according to buyer requirements and the approval process.

Whether your enquiry concerns T-shirts, polo shirts, hoodies or loungewear, distinguish what your team has confirmed from what still needs development. This guide helps you organise an initial discussion with Shristy Fashion without presenting a preliminary idea as a production-ready specification.

Start with five essential details

For an initial discussion, try to provide:

  1. Product: The garment category, intended wearer and basic design.
  2. Reference: A tech pack, specification, physical sample, sketch or product photographs.
  3. Quantity: An estimated order quantity, preferably by style and colour.
  4. Market and timing: The destination market and requested shipment period.
  5. Development status: Which specifications are confirmed and which still need discussion.

These details establish a starting point. More information may be required before a quotation, sample-development plan or production commitment can be confirmed.

How Shristy approaches an initial development discussion

Shristy Fashion supports development from the buyer information available for the programme. In-house pattern making provides a starting point for relevant samples and revisions; it does not mean that every process related to sampling is performed in-house. Fabric and specialist textile-process requirements are coordinated according to confirmed product and programme requirements.

To make the first discussion useful, separate your information into two groups:

  • Confirmed by your team: Approved product details, reference materials, measurements or artwork that should guide development.
  • Still to be developed or agreed: Preliminary fabric choices, fit adjustments, final measurements, quantities or other outstanding specifications.

Identify which reference is the current version and describe any differences between the reference garment and the product you want. This helps keep an initial development discussion distinct from a final specification or production commitment.

1. Identify the garment and intended market

Describe the product as clearly as possible.

Useful information includes the garment category, intended wearer, fit, general design and end use.

For example, an enquiry for a men’s regular-fit single-jersey T-shirt communicates more than a request for T-shirt production.

If your programme includes several styles, list them individually. A T-shirt, polo shirt and hoodie may have different fabric, development and manufacturing requirements even when they belong to the same collection.

2. Share a tech pack or reference information

A tech pack commonly contains garment drawings, measurements, material specifications, construction details, artwork, trims and packing information.

However, not every buyer has a complete tech pack at the first enquiry stage.

Other useful development references include:

  • A physical or reference garment
  • Front, back and detail photographs
  • Technical sketches
  • Available measurement specifications
  • A design concept requiring further development

For each reference, identify the version to use and any measurements, artwork or details already approved by your team. Explain which features are reference points rather than instructions to reproduce the garment exactly.

3. Explain fabric and material requirements

Fabric affects the appearance, comfort, structure and manufacturing requirements of a garment.

Where available, specify fabric composition, knit construction, weight and colour.

Relevant knit constructions may include single jersey, pique, interlock, rib, terry and fleece, depending on the intended product.

For example:

Fabric: 100% cotton, single jersey, 180 GSM.

This is an illustrative specification, not a standard requirement or a recommendation for every garment.

If the fabric has not been finalized, share a reference garment or describe the required appearance, weight and feel.

At Shristy Fashion, knitted fabrics are coordinated according to confirmed buyer and product requirements rather than a fixed fabric specification.

4. Clarify sizing, measurements and fit

Measurements and fit expectations are important inputs for product development.

Where available, provide the size range, measurement chart, fit reference and permitted measurement tolerances.

Explain whether the garment is intended to have a regular, relaxed, slim or another specified fit.

For children’s garments, identify the intended size range and any market-specific product safety or testing requirements.

When full measurement information is not available, a suitable reference garment can help establish the starting point for further clarification.

For guidance on reviewing samples and communicating revisions, see our knitwear sampling and approval guide.

5. Specify artwork, labels, trims and finishing

Product details should be communicated as part of the enquiry, not left entirely until the production stage.

Depending on the garment, identify printing, embroidery, labels, tags, buttons, zippers, drawcords, accessories, washing and special finishing requirements.

For printing and embroidery, provide buyer-supplied artwork, placement references and relevant dimensions where available.

Shristy Fashion handles core garment manufacturing in-house. Specialist textile processes, including knitting, dyeing, printing, embroidery, washing and special finishing, are coordinated through external processing partners where required.

Specific options must be reviewed against the actual product and programme requirements.

6. Provide expected order quantities

Quantities help manufacturers evaluate material requirements and production feasibility.

For a multi-style programme, provide an estimated quantity per style rather than only the overall collection total.

Where possible, include colour quantities, size breakdown and whether the order is an initial programme or a repeat requirement.

If quantities are preliminary, label them accordingly.

Minimum-order requirements depend on the product, materials, development work and order structure. Do not assume that one minimum quantity applies to every programme.

7. Explain quality and packing requirements

Buyers should communicate relevant quality expectations and the documents or inspection requirements applicable to their products.

These may concern workmanship, measurements, fabric performance, appearance, labelling, testing or other buyer-specific standards.

Packing requirements should also be identified, including folding, polybags, barcodes, size assortments, carton markings and shipment identification where relevant.

Shristy Fashion maintains in-house quality-control activities during garment production, finishing, final inspection and packing. Quality expectations are reviewed against relevant buyer specifications and approved samples.

Any certification or testing requirement should be discussed and verified separately. It should not be assumed from a general manufacturing description.

8. Share delivery and commercial expectations

An initial enquiry should identify the destination, requested shipment date and preferred commercial terms.

If available, buyers may also provide a target price, clearly stating the currency and pricing basis.

A requested date is not a confirmed lead-time commitment. Product complexity, materials, approvals and production scheduling can affect feasibility.

A quotation, order quantity, sample timetable or shipment schedule should be treated as confirmed only after the relevant requirements and commercial arrangements have been reviewed and agreed.

What if the specifications are incomplete?

You can approach Shristy Fashion with available reference information while making its approval status clear.

Illustrative enquiry — not an actual buyer order:

Our team has confirmed a men’s regular-fit jersey T-shirt in three colours. We have a reference garment and preliminary measurements; the fabric specification, final measurements and order quantities remain under review. Please advise which details are needed for an initial development discussion.

  • Confirmed in this illustration: The garment category, intended wearer, regular-fit direction and three-colour programme; a reference garment is available.
  • Outstanding in this illustration: The fabric specification, final measurements and order quantities. Preliminary measurements are a development reference, not an approved final measurement chart.
